Society Fellow, Roy Green, to lead the Energy Industry Jobs Plan assessment

The Australian Government’s Net Zero Economy Authority has announced that Society Fellow, Emeritus Professor Roy Green AM FRSN, will lead the statutory review of its Energy Industry Jobs Assessment Plan.

The Net Zero Economy Authority was established by the Australian Government in 2024 to to guide and support Australia’s transition to a net zero emissions economy by 2050 in a way that is fair, inclusive, and economically sound. It is specifically responsible for: (a) supporting workers affected by the closure of coal and gas facilities, helping them to transition into well-paid jobs in energy industries, (b) assisting communities impacted by the energy transition, especially those in industrial regions, through economic development and investment, and (c) shaping national policy.

One of its major programs is the Energy Industry Jobs Plan (EIJP), the goals of which are to provide structured support for workers affected by power station closures and fair pathways to new employment opportunities.

Professor Green’s task is to lead the review of the EIJP, the insights from which will strengthen the approach to future power station closures, ensuring workers are provided with necessary support, and reporting to the CEO of the Net Zero Authority, Mr David Shankey, and the Minister for Industry and Science, Senator the Hon. Tim Ayres, by the end of the year.

Professor Green has previously conducted the Australian Government’s Review of the Textile, Clothing and Footwear Industries, led Australian participation in a global study of management practice and productivity, and has prepared and co-authored numerous research and public policy reports.

Currently, he is the Special Innovation Advisor at the University of Technology Sydney, at which he was previously the Dean of the UTS Business School. He is currently a member of the Boards of the CSIRO and the SmartSat CRC, a member of the CSU Council, the Australian Design Council, and the Committee for Sydney Economics Advisory Council. Professor Green is also the current Chair of the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Hub and served as Chair of the Port of Newcastle.
