There’s no better way to welcome spring than by visiting the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan, to explore another aspect of the Royal Society’s links to scientific endeavours in NSW.

The Botanic Gardens of Sydney is the oldest scientific institution in Australia and continues to play a vital role in preserving the state’s cultural heritage and botanical collections. Today, the Gardens span hundreds of hectares and form a hub for research, education, and conservation. At the same time, they are integral parts of Sydney’s lifestyle and major tourist attractions.

This tour offers a unique opportunity to see the highlights of the Garden, and visit the National Herbarium of New South Wales with a collection of specimens that dates as far back as 1770, to the Wollemi Pine and more recent discoveries. We will learn about the Australian PlantBank and visit the nursery to see the meta collections of endangered species and the research associated with that.

Our host, Professor Brett Summerell AM, Chief Scientist and Director of Science, Education and Conservation, with Dr Barbara Briggs PSM FRSN, Honorary Research Associate at the Botanic Gardens of Sydney, and tour leader Emeritus Professor Robert Clancy AM FRSN, have designed an event not to be missed for anyone passionate about botany, conservation, and the environment.

Practical note: The Garden opens at 8.00 am. Participants are gathering at 11.30 am in the Garden Café for an early lunch. The event begins at 12.30 pm at the front door of the Herbarium building.
