The Council of the Royal Society of NSW is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Brandon Munn as the inaugural Early Career Researcher on the Society’s governing body.
His appointment follows a recent rule change, overwhelmingly approved by Society members, that will increase young people’s participation and engagement. It comes after an expression of interest sought from existing Society members who identify as early career researchers, typically under the age of 35, have a demonstrated interest in the Society and support its goals and values, and who are keen to take a leadership role in developing and supporting the Society’s youth and early career initiatives.
Dr Munn is a neuroscientist in the University of Sydney Brain and Mind Centre and the School of Medical Sciences. He was awarded a prestigious ARC DECRA early career Fellowship in late 2025 to investigate how the brain coordinates activity across different scales to support flexible cognition and behaviour, advancing our understanding of the fundamental principles that govern brain function, and was also awarded one of the Society’s Bicentennial Early Career Research and Service Citations in 2025. He has an excellent record of research achievement, early-career researcher representation, mentoring and organisational leadership, and has already contributed to establishing the Society’s Youth Network and its participation in the upcoming 2026 RSNSW and Learned Academies Forum on ‘A Hinge of History.’
Dr Munn joins the RSNSW Council from early November 2026 until the Annual General Meeting in April 2028. The Council, in noting this important milestone for the Society, warmly welcomes his appointment and looks forward to his contributions over the coming years.
