The Royal Society of NSW was delighted to learn of the awarding of the Jerome Sacks Award for 2026 by the US National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) to Distinguished Professor Noel Cressie FRSN FAA of the University of Wollongong. The NISS Sacks Award recognises sustained, high-quality cross-disciplinary research involving the statistical sciences.
Noel Cressie is the Director of the University of Wollongong Centre for Environmental Informatics in the National Institute for Applied Statistics Research Australia (NIASRA) and is a Distinguished Professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences. He is an Affiliate at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Missouri in the Department of Statistics and Data Science. His cross-disciplinary research involving the statistical sciences includes global CO2 flux, regional climate, sea surface temperature, air pollution, disease mapping, ocean biogeochemical cycles, soil carbon dynamics, glacier movement, and river pollution.
Professor Cressie undertook his undergraduate studies in mathematics at the University of Western Australia and subsequently graduated with a PhD from Princeton University. Much of his professional life has been spent in the USA, serving as a professor and distinguished professor at Iowa State University and Ohio State University, before taking up his current role in Wollongong in 2012. He was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 0218 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of NSW in 2020.
