Summary: Robert Parker’s talk will detail his recent research, concluding with an outline of the benefits he sees to rural and regional Australia from a program of nuclear energy based on both some small and some larger plants as described in his photographs, interviews, etc. He will discuss his views on the benefits to community growth, stability, and education and quote the findings of the UN and EU reports that recommend nuclear energy to be the most sustainable and low-carbon energy source for the future. He also supports the belief that it eliminates the need to industrialise our landscapes and requires very few changes to our existing grid.
As former President and Vice-President of the Australian Nuclear Association, Robert Parker was tasked with carrying out investigations of current advances in the nuclear fuel cycle for power generation. Since his last lecture to the RSNSW Southern Highlands branch in 2022, Robert has recently conducted a study tour to Canada and the USA, examining in detail Canadian small modular reactor (SMR) activity. During this time, he met with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission among many others, and received a full briefing on BWRX 300 SMR being built at Darlington on Lake Ontario. Robert holds a Master of Nuclear Science from ANU, a Master of Engineering Science from UNSW, and a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from UNSW.
